Can You Restrict BooksCloud Bulk Sync to Only the Sub-Categories You Want?

One of the most common questions from niche-store merchants using BooksCloud is some version of this: "I run a keto diet store. I want cooking books - but only keto books, not every general cooking title. Can I configure Bulk Sync to do that?"

The honest answer is: not directly at the sub-sub-category level. But there are practical approaches that get you close, and understanding the full set of available tools helps you build a strategy that keeps your catalog tight.

What Bulk Sync Filters Actually Do

BooksCloud's Bulk Sync allows you to filter the titles that auto-populate your store using several parameters:

Category selection. You choose which broad book category to sync - "Cooking," "Health & Fitness," "Sports & Outdoors," etc. This is the primary organizational layer.

Cover type. You can filter to hardcover, paperback, or both. Useful if your price point or audience preference favors one format.

Language. You can restrict to English-only titles or include other languages.

Bestseller percentile. You can set a threshold that only adds books above a certain bestseller ranking - a useful quality filter that surfaces more commercially validated titles and excludes obscure or low-quality additions.

What's not available: a filter that lets you specify a keyword or sub-sub-category within a broad category. There is currently no way to tell Bulk Sync to add only "keto" titles within "Cooking," or only "trail running" titles within "Sports & Outdoors." The sync operates at the category level.

The Practical Workaround: Hybrid Strategy

Given this limitation, the most effective approach for niche-specific merchants is a hybrid of Bulk Sync and individual title search.

Option 1: Skip Bulk Sync for tight niches, use individual search instead. BooksCloud's individual title search lets you search by keyword, author, ISBN, or topic and add specific titles one by one. If you search "keto" in the BooksCloud catalog, you'll get results you can review and add selectively. This gives you complete editorial control. The trade-off is that it requires ongoing manual effort to add new releases - you won't get automatic updates when a new keto book becomes available.

Option 2: Enable Bulk Sync for the broader category, then curate after. Set up a Bulk Sync for "Cooking" (with bestseller percentile filtering turned up to reduce noise), let it populate your store, and then go through and delete titles that don't fit your keto focus. This is faster to set up initially but requires periodic culling. New non-keto titles will continue to be added by the sync, requiring ongoing review.

Option 3: Combine both approaches. Use individual search to build an initial curated core of keto-specific titles. Then enable Bulk Sync on the broader "Health & Fitness" or "Cooking" category with aggressive bestseller filtering as a supplementary layer - accepting that you'll occasionally need to delete off-topic additions.

Why Bestseller Filtering Helps With Niche Relevance

The bestseller percentile filter is more useful than it first appears. Books with strong bestseller ranks in a broad category like "Cooking" tend to be well-known titles with clear topic focus. Obscure or low-quality titles that might be loosely categorized under "Cooking" but don't match your audience are more likely to be filtered out when you raise the percentile threshold.

It's not a perfect proxy for niche relevance, but it meaningfully reduces the noise you'd otherwise need to manually remove.

The Realistic Takeaway

If your store is tightly niche - keto, trail running, fly fishing, mindfulness - individual title curation will always give you better catalog precision than Bulk Sync alone. BooksCloud's individual search makes this feasible even for large catalogs, and many merchants report that building a curated, deliberate book list reinforces their brand identity in ways that broad auto-sync doesn't.

"Great app, has bulk add feature, and a large selection of books." - and for the merchants who want to go deeper than bulk, the individual search tools are there to give you exactly the catalog your niche audience deserves.
