Buying clothing through the mails had become an American institution, and entire families were often dressed via the U.S. Post Office. More conservative than the up-to-the-minute fashion shops, mail-order catalogs nevertheless offered surprisingly much of the haute couture. But, above all, they accurately record what men, women, and children were actually wearing in the 1920s.
Now Stella Blum (Curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) has distilled into this volume the essence of the fashion pages of the Sears, Roebuck and other mail-order catalogs of the Twenties. Her informative text and selection of over 150 representative catalog pages -- comprising over 750 illustrations with original captions -- gradually trace the evolution of dress modes from the vogue of stodgy postwar fashions to the impact on costume of the crash of '29. In a year-by-year survey, Mrs. Blum's introductory texts relate the trends in fashion to the social changes of the dynamic and restless era, assessing the influence of war and technological developments on the high hemlines, flattened busts and hips, geometric patterns and "bobbed" hairstyles of the boyish flapper look. And as she notes, it was through the Sears catalogs that Parisian designers like Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, and Madeleine Vionnet made their influence felt on Midwestern farms and in urban ghettos.
You'll find here a marvelous panorama of "smart," "modish," "chic," "stylish," and "ultra fashionable" apparel, as well as more traditional garments: for women and "misses" there are Middy blouses, Russian boots modeled by Gloria Swanson, "Bob" hats modeled by Clara Bow and Joan Crawford; coats, suits, dresses (including the first maternity dresses), sweaters, capes; silk and rayon stockings, corsets, chemises, camisoles, negligees; and accessories like necklaces, belts, combs, headbands, umbrellas, gloves, compacts, hand bags, wristwatches, and powderpuff cases. You'll see slower-to-change men's fashions -- shirts, ties, suits, sweaters, and sports clothes -- become trimmer, brighter, smarter. And you can follow the trends in children's fashions as well.
For historians of costume, nostalgia buffs, and casual browsers, these pages afford a rare picture -- unspoiled by recent myths about the Roaring Twenties -- of how average people really dressed in the jazz age.

Number of Pages: 160

Dimensions: 0.36 x 11.94 x 9 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: December 01, 1981

Report copyright infringement

by Stella Blum (Editor)

After the Civil War the upper middle class in America expanded and became increasingly style-conscious. Dedicated to being A repository of Fashion, Pleasure, and Instruction, it brought to American women inside glimpses of the very latest European and American fashions, all in carefully detailed engravings. It was much the finest source for high fashion for this period.
This book consists of the finest illustrations from Harper's Bazar between the years 1867 and 1898, the period of its peak importance. These illustrations not only show you what apparel appealed to our Victorian ancestors, but give you an idea of the evolutionary nature of fashion as well. You will see bustles come and go, natural forms become the vogue only to be superseded by the constricting hourglass figure. Each look is illustrated with a number of different garments. There are gowns for the morning hours, dinner dresses, sporting costumes, traveling clothes and apparel for special occasions: weddings, communions, funerals, etc. Since no costume was complete without accessories, a full line of hats, fans, parasols, muffs, gloves, handkerchiefs, jewelry, shoes and hair styles is shown as well. A selection of children's attire is also included. Photography historian Alison Gernsheim first studied Victorian and Edwardian fashion in order to be able to date photographs in her collection. Of course the photos soon proved to be the best of all fashion plates -- authentic, detailed, as decorative and charming as top fashion illustration. When united with identifications and descriptions of the chief costume articles, and a commentary that includes childhood memories of the period, the resulting history is doubly indispensable -- equally useful and delightful to serious and casual readers.
The invention of photography preceded that of the crinoline by about a decade. Pre-crinoline bonnets, stovepipe hats, and deep d colletage are featured in the first of these 235 illustrations -- including a beautiful 1840 daguerreotype portrait of a lady that is the earliest study of its kind extant. From 1855 to the 1870s the crinoline gave shape (whether barrel, bell, teapot, or otherwise) to English women, and their shapes fill many of these full and half-page photos. English men went beardless in top hats and frock coats; as in other eras, the sporting wear of the previous generation became acceptable morning and evening town attire. Styles and accoutrements came and went -- moustaches, straw hats, bustles and bodice line, petticoats, corsets, shawls and falsies, flounces, ruffles, lace, and materials -- satin, silk, velvet, woolen underwear, full-length sable, and osprey feathers. Many of the models for these fashions were already fashionable enough -- Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, Lillie Langtry, Winston Churchill, many archdukes, duchesses, counts, princes, and Queen Victoria herself. Photographers are identified where possible, and include Nadar, Lewis Carroll, and the Downeys. It not only discusses and describes the clothing worn in rural America (primarily in New England) between 1783 and 1800, it is one of the few books to include scaled drawings of patterns and full instructions for making most of the garments.
The attire includes the clothing both of settlers and of the Abenaki Indians of New England. The Abenaki traditionally wore clothing made of soft tanned deerskin or moosehide, sometimes decorated with dyes or with complex embroidery of dyed porcupine quills and moose hair. By the late eighteenth century, however, the Abenaki had adopted certain of the settlers' garments, such as the men's shirt and the women's shift. Similarly, the settlers had begun to wear moccasins, leggings, and other Indian garments when it made sense in their daily lives.
The heart of this book is devoted to full descriptions and scaled patterns for specific garments. For women: shift, petticoat and skirt, gowns, neckerchief, apron, headgear, and more. Men's clothes include shirt, cravat and stock, breeches and breechcloth, waistcoat, coat, frock, and headgear. Also covered are men's and women's stockings, leggings, shoes, and moccasins. While the majority of the clothing was worn in rural areas, small-town clothing is described as well.
Cultural and costume historians, or anyone interested in the clothing styles of the late eighteenth century in rural America, will find a rich store of information and practical instruction in this book. An ambitious marketing operation, it could not afford to take chances on haute couture; its fashions were geared as closely as possible to the prevailing tastes of the American people.
For this historically accurate sampling of authentic 1930s fashion, Stella Blum, former Curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, selected for reproduction 133 representative pages from rare Sears catalogs of the period (fall and spring catalog for each year from 1930 to 1939). Hundreds of illustrations record what men, women, and children were actually wearing in the 1930s when, as a copyline from the Fall 1930 catalog proclaimed: "Thrift is the spirit of the day. Reckless spending is a thing of the past."
You'll see here how simpler women's fashion designs -- of more traditional, affordable material -- recaptured the feminine form with a more natural waistline and lower hemlines than seen in the twenties. For evening wear, longer dresses replaced flamboyant beaded short gowns while cloche hats, another twenties trademark, were replaced by berets, pillboxes, and turbans. The seriousness of the accessories and dresses endorsed by such Hollywood legends as Loretta Young, Claudette Colbert, and Fay Wray.
For historians of costume, nostalgia buffs and casual browsers, these pages afford a rare picture of how the average American really dressed during the thirties. Houston (Author)

Clothing was hardly a practical necessity in North Africa and what is today the Middle East. Often a luxury item in these warm, humid climates, it became more essential as people's lives improved socially and economically. But even then, the drapery was light and tended to accent the body's shape rather than conceal it. The first part of this profusely illustrated and scrupulously researched text examines the evolution in apparel worn by Egyptian royalty, priests, musicians, manual workers, the military, and foreigners (as depicted by Egyptian artists). Two additional sections consider clothing worn in ancient Mesopotamia and Persia, focusing largely on Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian styles. Over 250 illustrations, drawn in the artistic style of the period, are accompanied by flat patterns showing the cut of the garment, thus enabling today's costumers to accurately reconstruct this apparel. A comprehensive archive that will not only be of immense value to fashion historians and students of costume design, this volume will also fascinate anyone interested in the development of artistic representation.

Number of Pages: 208

Dimensions: 0.57 x 9.32 x 6.52 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: November 02, 2011

Report copyright infringement

by Albert Kretschmer (Compiled by), Karl Rohrbach (Text by (Art/Photo Books))

Ranging from the elegant garments worn by citizens of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to the dramatic clothing of nineteenth-century French, English, and German societies, this stunning pictorial encyclopedia chronicles the full sweep of historic dress through the centuries.
Carefully gathered from a rare portfolio originally published in 1906, over one thousand detailed engravings are presented here in a continuous chronological format. In order to maintain vital links to their traditions and culture, slaves retained certain customs and nurtured them in the Caribbean. The creation of lace-bark cloth from the lagetta tree was a practice that enabled slave women to fashion their own clothing, an exercise that was both a necessity, as clothing provisions for slaves were poor, and empowering, as it allowed women who participated in the industry to achieve some financial independence.

This is the first book on the subject and, through close collaboration with experts in the field including Maroon descendants, scientists and conservationists, it offers a pioneering perspective on the material culture of Caribbean slaves, bringing into focus the dynamics of race, class and gender. Focussing on the time period from the 1660s to the 1920s, it examines how the industry developed, the types of clothes made, and the people who wore them. The study asks crucial questions about the social roles that bark cloth production played in the plantation economy and colonial society, and in particular explores the relationship between bark cloth production and identity amongst slave women.
Author Biography

Steeve O. Often viewed as a simple, unchanging garment, the kimono has been equated with" tradition" and seen as something static and timeless. This book, published to accompany a major exhibition at the V&A, London, presents the kimono as dynamic and fashionable, and explores its significance in historical and contemporary contexts, both in Japan and in the West. Beautifully illustrated, it includes more than 200 kimono from collections at the V&A and around the world, as well as examples of the ways in which they have been represented in paintings, prints, and photographs, and interpreted more recently in popular culture and fashion, from Bj rk to David Bowie, John Galliano to Issey Miyake.

Author Biography

Anna Jackson is keeper of the Asian department at the V&A.

Number of Pages: 304

Dimensions: 1.3 x 12.4 x 9.6 IN

Publication Date: March 17, 2020

images-of-jesus-picture-book-a-hardback-gift-book-for-christian-children-seniors-with-dementia-and-alzheimers-patients-wordless-books-hardcover
Images of Jesus Picture Book: A Hardback Gift Book for Christian Children, Seniors with Dementia, and Alzheimer's Patients (Wordless Books) - Hardcover

Report copyright infringement

by Murre Book Decor (Author)

A wordless picture book for Christians.

40 full color Jesus pictures.

Portable 6" x 9" size to fit in purse or backpack.

Makes a great coffee table book for Holiday's or Christmas.

Number of Pages: 44

Dimensions: 0.25 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: July 14, 2021

Report copyright infringement

by Ernest Quansah (Author)

Ernest Quansah is Lifestyle Strategist and internationally sought-after Keynote speaker on diabetes. If you are tired of ignoring your pain...If you have tried taking painkillers, going to physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors... then you need this book as it will open your eyes to a completely new paradigm of looking at and treating neck pain and tension.

Recent scientific research shows that your neck pain is a symptom of a much greater and deeper problem, a problem which is much harder to see (that's the bad news), but a lot easier to fix (that's the good news). Would you like to learn what this problem is?

This is what you will discover in the book, and for now, allow me to offer you a glimpse of what you will learn.

Neck pain is a result of major systems of your body malfunctioning. This is an absolutely key point. Understanding this point is the difference between succumbing to disease or living long pain-free life.

Please refer to the first couple of sections of the book that you can read for free, here on Amazon to learn about this key point.

Now, you have two options on how to deal with neck pain:

- You can treat the symptom (your neck pain)

- You can treat the dysfunctional systems that produce the symptom.

In the first case, even if you succeed to reduce neck pain short-term, it will likely come back. Moreover, you will have a higher risk of getting sick with more serious medical conditions caused by dysfunctions in your major bodily systems.

In the second case, if you choose to treat the dysfunctional systems, you will be much more successful in resolving your neck pain and tension, and you will decrease the risk of getting sick with more serious disorders.
