Without mathematical complexities, but in simple language and with many clarifying illustrations, the author demonstrates the geometrical constructions that the great architects of Canterbury Cathedral devised to bring the geometry of their building into harmony with that of the Universe, and with the geometries of their predecessors. What are the common features of these transformations? How can one generalise them to explain similar phenomena that appear in different arts and sciences? What other forms of symmetry can we include in the scope of our study by the application of these generalised rules? How can a common phenomenon lend possible solutions from one discipline to another? Did you know that symmetry is a universal concept that has appeared in all cultures since prehistoric times, accompanying us through the history of mankind? What important role have asymmetries like the one-handedness of the neutrino played in the formation of matter, from the assumed Big Bang through to the asymmetries of the human brain? This book tries to explain these and a number of related questions.
This is the first comprehensive book on the topic since the publication of H. Weyl's popular book on symmetry more than fifty years ago. It is relevant to almost all fields of science where symmetry appears as a phenomenon or is applied as a method, and where the concept is present in contemporary sciences, humanities and arts.

Symmetry used to be a fundamental phenomenon in crystallography, where its basic concept was elaborated, in morphological biology, and of course in mathematics, which provided its exact description. In the last half century symmetry (and symmetry breaking) has become a leading principle in physics, in all sciences that deal with the structure of matter, as well as in the biochemistry of proteins, the study of the genetic code, brain research (where functional asymmetries have been revealed), psychology, and in developing architectural structures and in business decision-making, to name but a few examples. This book seeks to find common regularities among these apparently disparate phenomena. It coversmost of the achievements reached in the sciences in recent decades that have been given new impetus by the mutual influences of art and science related to symmetry (or the lack of it).

Following two introductory chapters, which include the newest generalisation of the concept of symmetry and outline a historical approach, the author leads the reader, step by step, from the relevant basic phenomena to the most typical applications of different appearances of symmetries in the sciences and the humanities. Several references are made to the history of science and art and to philosophical conclusions. The author avoids unnecessary detail and gives many examples, providing 350 illustrations. The essential knowledge on the topic is arranged in an ontological order, following the self-organisation of matter from investigations into inanimate nature, through the formation of organic matter, to the products of the human mind.

As is demanded by the formulation of the fundamental knowledge for a new discipline, the book keeps to scientific standards. It exceeds the limits of popular science, and is formulated at a university level. Although it presumes the knowledge of an average university student, it avoids difficult mathematical formulations in order to make the subject understandable for adherents of other disciplines.

Number of Pages: 508

Dimensions: 1.12 x 9.37 x 6.83 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: February 15, 2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2782/3097/files/OG1ONlNwSnVBZ3VuOUxDcklNSGtsUT09_c2e8c73b-4db9-404c-98d4-9852ee1f1ec8.webp?v=1767614342
non-linear-mechanics-of-reinforced-concrete-paperback-1
Non-Linear Mechanics of Reinforced Concrete - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by K. The linkages Witt explores involve not the mystic transcendence of numbers invoked throughout architectural history, but rather architecture's encounters with a range of calculational systems--techniques that architects inventively retooled for design. Witt offers a catalog of mid-twentieth-century practices of mathematical drawing and calculation in design that preceded and anticipated digitization as well as an account of the formal compendia that became a cultural currency shared between modern mathematicians and modern architects.
Witt presents a series of extensively illustrated "biographies of method"--episodes that chart the myriad ways in which mathematics, particularly the mathematical notion of modeling and drawing, was spliced into the creative practice of design. These include early drawing machines that mechanized curvature; the incorporation of geometric maquettes--"theorems made flesh"--into the toolbox of design; the virtualization of buildings and landscapes through surveyed triangulation and photogrammetry; formal and functional topology; stereoscopic drawing; the economic implications of cubic matrices; and a strange synthesis of the technological, mineral, and biological: crystallographic design.
Trained in both architecture and mathematics, Witt uses mathematics as a lens through which to understand the relationship between architecture and a much broader set of sciences and visual techniques. Through an intercultural exchange with other disciplines, he argues, architecture adapted not only the shapes and surfaces of mathematics but also its values and epistemic ideals.

Author Biography

Andrew Witt is Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and cofounder of Certain Measures, a design and technology studio based in Berlin and Boston.

Number of Pages: 432

Dimensions: 1.3 x 7.9 x 5.3 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: January 11, 2022

Report copyright infringement

by Charles S. The book is focused on the recovery of ancient measures from various monuments. Petrie, who was an archaeologist and Egyptologist, used his extensive knowledge of ancient civilizations to examine and decipher the measurements used by these cultures. The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the theory of metrology and the second part focuses on the practical application of this theory. Petrie examines the various systems of measurement used by ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. He also looks at the methods used by these cultures to record and preserve their measurements. The book is full of detailed illustrations and diagrams that help to explain the various measurement systems. Petrie also includes a glossary of terms and a table of conversions to help readers understand the different units of measurement used by these ancient cultures.Inductive Metrology is an important book for anyone interested in the history of measurement and the development of metrology. It provides a fascinating insight into the methods used by ancient civilizations to measure and record their world. Petrie's meticulous research and attention to detail make this book a valuable resource for historians, archaeologists, and anyone interested in the history of science and technology. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Robbin explores the distinction between the slicing, or Flatland, model and the projection, or shadow, model. He compares the history of these two models and their uses and misuses in popular discussions. Robbin breaks new ground with his original argument that Picasso used the projection model to invent cubism, and that Minkowski had four-dimensional projective geometry in mind when he structured special relativity. The discussion is brought to the present with an exposition of the projection model in the most creative ideas about space in contemporary mathematics such as twisters, quasicrystals, and quantum topology. Robbin clarifies these esoteric concepts with understandable drawings and diagrams.

Author Biography

Tony Robbin has had more than twenty-five solo exhibitions of his paintings and sculpture since his debut at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1974. Barrow (Author)

At first glance, the worlds of math and the arts might not seem like comfortable neighbors. But as mathematician John D. Barrow points out, they have a strong and natural affinity--after all, math is the study of all patterns, and the world of the arts is rich with pattern. Barrow whisks us through 100 thought-provoking and often whimsical intersections between math and many arts, from the golden ratios of Mondrian's rectangles and the curious fractal-like nature of Pollock's drip paintings to ballerinas' gravity-defying leaps and the next generation of monkeys on typewriters tackling Shakespeare. For those of us with our feet planted more firmly on the ground, Barrow also wields everyday equations to reveal how many guards are needed in an art gallery or where you should stand to look at sculptures. From music and drama to literature and the visual arts, Barrow's witty and accessible observations are sure to spark the imaginations of math nerds and art aficionados alike.

Number of Pages: 320

Dimensions: 0.9 x 8.2 x 5.4 IN

Publication Date: January 18, 2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2782/3097/files/aFNEUndQRC9VRjdNNy9jbnBYTUhIdz09_d8659dd4-1c7d-42f2-b23d-30dbfac13341.webp?v=1767629018
the-geometry-of-art-and-life-paperback-1
The Geometry of Art and Life - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Matila Ghyka (Author)

Is everything chaos and chance, or is there order, harmony, and proportion in human life, nature, and the finest art? What is the true significance of the triangle, rectangle, spiral, and other geometric shapes? These are but a few of the questions that Professor Matila Ghyka deals with in this fascinating book. The author believes that there are such things as The Mathematics of Life and The Mathematics of Art, and that the two coincide. Using simple mathematical formulas, most as basic as Pythagoras' theorem and requiring only a very limited knowledge of mathematics, Professor Ghyka shows the fascinating relationships between geometry, aesthetics, nature, and the human body.
Beginning with ideas from Plato, Pythagoras, Archimedes, Ockham, Kepler, and others, the author explores the outlines of an abstract science of space, which includes a theory of proportions, an examination of the golden section, a study of regular and semi-regular polyhedral, and the interlinking of these various shapes and forms. He then traces the transmission of this spatial science through the Pythagorean tradition and neo-Pythagorism, Greek, and Gothic canons of proportion, the Kabbala, Masonic traditions and symbols, and modern applications in architecture, painting, and decorative art. When we judge a work of art, according to his formulation, we are making it conform to a pattern whose outline is laid down in simple geometrical figures; and it is the analysis of these figures both in art and nature that forms the core of Professor Ghyka's book. He also shows this geometry at work in living organisms. The ample illustrations and figures give concrete examples of the author's analysis: the Great Pyramid and tomb of Rameses IV, the Parthenon, Renaissance paintings and architecture, the work of Seurat, Le Corbusier, and flowers, shells, marine life, the human face, and much more.
For the philosopher, scientist, archaeologist, art historian, biologist, poet, and artist as well as the general reader who wants to understand more about the fascinating properties of numbers and geometry, and their relationship to art and life, this is a thought-provoking book.

Front Jacket

Is everything chaos and chance, or is there order, harmony, and proportion in human life, nature, and the finest art? Mathematicians and artists have long been on a quest to understand the physical world they see before them and the abstract objects they know by thought alone. Taking readers on a tour of the practice of mathematics and the philosophical ideas that drive the discipline, Lynn Gamwell points out the important ways mathematical concepts have been expressed by artists. Sumptuous illustrations of artworks and cogent math diagrams are featured in Gamwell's comprehensive exploration.

Gamwell begins by describing mathematics from antiquity to the Enlightenment, including Greek, Islamic, and Asian mathematics. Then focusing on modern culture, Gamwell traces mathematicians' search for the foundations of their science, such as David Hilbert's conception of mathematics as an arrangement of meaning-free signs, as well as artists' search for the essence of their craft, such as Aleksandr Rodchenko's monochrome paintings. She shows that self-reflection is inherent to the practice of both modern mathematics and art, and that this introspection points to a deep resonance between the two fields: Kurt Gödel posed questions about the nature of mathematics in the language of mathematics and Jasper Johns asked "What is art?" in the vocabulary of art. Throughout, Gamwell describes the personalities and cultural environments of a multitude of mathematicians and artists, from Gottlob Frege and Benoît Mandelbrot to Max Bill and Xu Bing.

Mathematics and Art demonstrates how mathematical ideas are embodied in the visual arts and will enlighten all who are interested in the complex intellectual pursuits, personalities, and cultural settings that connect these vast disciplines.
Back Jacket

"Mathematics and Art describes mankind's search for patterns and the expression of these numbers and forms by artists. This book is the first to examine the unified concepts of harmony, proportion, form, and order that were attributed to Pythagoras in the millennium after his death and the important developments to which they led in art, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, music, medicine, morals, religion, law, alchemy, and the occult sciences. In this profusely illustrated book, Christiane L. In illuminating this tradition of thought, Joost-Gaugier shows how the influence of Pythagoreanism was far broader than is usually realized, and that it affected the development of ancient and medieval art and architecture from Greek and Roman temples to Gothic cathedrals.Joost-Gaugier demonstrates that Pythagoreanism--centered on the dim memory of a single person that endured for centuries and grew ever-greater--inspired a new language for artists and architects, enabling them to be "modern."

Author Biography

Christiane L. This art-style book with highly polished design elements leads the reader from discovery to discovery, complemented by original text from the author, a PhD who has studied Frank's work from its inception, when it was just seven sticks in a ball of mud on the banks of the American River... From the back cover: The ancient tradition of Sacred Geometry is still alive and well in the person of Frank Chester. He has discovered a new geometric form that unites the five Platonic solids and provides some startling indications about the form and function of the human heart. This new form, called the Chestahedron, was discovered in 2000, and is a seven-sided polyhedron with surfaces of equal area. Frank has been exploring the form and its significance for over a decade. His work has potential implications across a number of areas, from physiology to architecture, sculpture, geology, and beyond. Inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, Frank sees a deep connection between form and spirit. In the past, reaching this level of thinking proved difficult as relatively few students were well-equipped to think in this manner. In order to prepare students for abstract mathematics, many transitional books are available. However, these books primarily focus on the treatment of logic and the art of proof writing. In many cases, this approach intimidates student causing them to shy away from abstract mathematics altogether.

The purpose of this book is to prepare the reader to think in a manner conducive to learning abstract mathematics. It is intended for readers of varying mathematical abilities with the goal of helping readers to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of modern abstract mathematics and to pique their interest in learning additional mathematical topics and ways of thinking. In order to keep the reader engaged, the author has attempted to use graphics and lively humor as well as concrete examples to illustrate the features of general concepts.

This book, A Cartoon Primer of Modern Mathematics, is an essential supplement for students of all levels, in school, college, and beyond.

Number of Pages: 230

Dimensions: 0.48 x 11 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: August 15, 2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2782/3097/files/S3I0NWRzK1ZHZlBtQ0EwbFp2V0E2UT09_fe78c84f-5831-4c1e-877a-f909ac1f5355.webp?v=1767636399
dynamic-symmetry-the-greek-vase-paperback-1
Dynamic Symmetry: The Greek Vase - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Jay Hambidge (Author)

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.

This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Now fully revised and expanded, this richly illustrated book describes two hundred years of scientific discoveries that inspired French Impressionist painters and Art Nouveau architects, as well as Surrealists in Europe, Latin America, and Japan.

Lynn Gamwell describes how the microscope and telescope expanded the artist's vision into realms unseen by the naked eye. In the nineteenth century, a strange and exciting world came into focus, one of microorganisms in a drop of water and spiral nebulas in the night sky. The world is also filled with forces that are truly unobservable, known only indirectly by their effects--radio waves, X-rays, and sound-waves. Gamwell shows how artists developed the pivotal style of modernism--abstract, non-objective art--to symbolize these unseen worlds. Starting in Germany with Romanticism and ending with international contemporary art, she traces the development of the visual arts as an expression of the scientific worldview in which humankind is part of a natural web of dynamic forces without predetermined purpose or meaning. Stunning in their search of perfection amid countless symmetries the art achieves a beauty inspired by its divine motivations. On a more practical side, sacred art represents an excellent application of the principles of geometry as illustrated by Euclid in the Elements. Countless constructions and theorems first discovered by the ancient Greek mathematicians are carefully merged with craftsmanship to produce murals, paintings and mosaics of infinite variety. This book grew out of a set of workshops done primarily through the Monterey Bay Area Math Project over the last several years. The book begins with a discussion of compass-straightedge constructions of polygons and the variety of regular and semi-regular tilings. The Polygon-in-Contact method as initially documented in the Topkapi Scrolls and further developed by contemporary scholars and artists is introduced as a method of generating traditional Islamic Geometric patterns. Many examples are illustrated with varying degrees of complexity suitable for all age groups. In addition to developing traditional patterns, the methods shown illustrate areas of generalization constrained only by students imagination.

Number of Pages: 180

Dimensions: 0.41 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: January 30, 2020

Report copyright infringement

by Mohammad Majid Al-Rifaie (Author), Anna Ursyn (Author), Theodor Wyeld (Author)

As the title suggests, this book explores the concepts of drawing, graphics and animation in the context of coding. In my earlier years, I loved drawing, painting, and building things. Then I got a degree in architecture and ran my own business for a few years. Now I teach interaction design (mobile phone apps, web apps, Java GUIs, etc.) and 3D media studios (animation, VFX, motion capture, and so on). But I was always fascinated by the power of the computer - what could be done with it, how it worked, the way it could be used to manipulate various sources of information and re-present it in graphical ways. For me, it's all about making sense of the world around us, interactively and graphically. I find the computer a great medium for exploring this notion. My latest interest is in 3D printing and artificial intelligence. I really believe, in time, we should be able to instruct computers to do the boring stuff so we can get on with being creative. This is a bit like my experience going from hand drawing perspective images in architecture to using computers to do the 3D modelling part (between the 1980s and 1990s). It meant I could spend more time on the outcomes and less on getting good at setting up the grids for a perspective drawing! For you, it might be letting Photoshop apply a filter to your digital drawing so you can get on with the overall composition, rather than having to learn a new tool. But, to be really innovative, you need to know how the tools work and even how to build your own tools. Then you can really set the world alight! For me, that's what this book aims to do - give you the insights and inspiration to build your own tools, widgets, and apps,
creatively.

Number of Pages: 318

Dimensions: 0.7 x 9.2 x 6.1 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: February 28, 2020

Report copyright infringement

by Daud Sutton (Author)

Across the Islamic world, illuminating Korans from Morocco to Malaysia, and adorning mosques, mausoleums and palaces, are hidden some of the most exquisite geometrical devices ever conceived by man. A fractal is essentially a never-ending, repeating pattern. Fractals reflect the art of chaos, as seen in crystal growth and galaxy formation. Fractal geometry can reflect and illuminate structures and patterns found in nature-from mountains, coastlines, and hurricanes to movements of the stock market over time. But this is also an art history of the polyhedra themselves, emblems of an evolving artistic intelligence, which include a varied set of geometrical figures--both Platonic, or regular, like the simple tetrahedron, and Archimedean, or irregular, like the complex yet beguiling rhombicosidodecahedron.

Moreover, The Polyhedrists argues that the geometrical depictions of Dürer, Jamnitzer et al. were far more than mere follies from the dawn of perspective, at odds with a contemporary view of the Renaissance, and destined to be superseded by later developments in higher level mathematics. In fact, the evolution of the solids into innumerable "irregular bodies" constituted a sustained moment in the formulation of Renaissance mathematical knowledge and its engagement with materiality. This intense field of experimentation would birth a new language of geometrical abstraction that would ignite a century of novel form-making strategies, ultimately paving the way for developments in geometry and topology in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and even prefiguring the more recent digital turn. The book, in this sense, is not just an applied history of geometry, nor a particular geometric reading of early modern art through some of its more celebrated practitioners, but a manifesto of sorts into the hitherto unexplored wilds of art and science.
Author Biography

Noam Andrews, a historian and architect, is Research Fellow in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University, Belgium. Most of these geometric sculptures are already well known and have been mainly constructed in wood, metal or plastic. They are also popular as origami models. Only a few of these are my own discoveries. I have chosen this as a media because it is easy to assemble without the preparation of materials as compared to using wood. Building blocks is excellent for prototyping for these projects. Your ideas can be realized with minimum effort and easy to make changes and trying out other designs. I hope you will have as much fun as I did in creating the sculptures and to solve problems during the assembly. At times it is similar to solving a puzzle and it needs patience. A good compilation is from a book "Orderly Tangles" by Alan Holden. He use the term "regular polylinks " to describe these type of geometric linkages derived from polyhedra. As regular polylinks become more widely known perhaps someone will discover significant applications for these beautiful mathematical objects. By using this as a media to create sculptures and models will hopefully make these more easily accessible to all. Not so. This intriguing book shows how intertwined the disciplines are. Portraying the work of many contemporary artists in media from metals to glass to snow, Fragments of Infinity draws us into the mysteries of one-sided surfaces, four-dimensional spaces, self-similar structures, and other bizarre or seemingly impossible features of modern mathematics as they are given visible expression. Featuring more than 250 beautiful illustrations and photographs of artworks ranging from sculptures both massive and minute to elaborate geometric tapestries and mosaics of startling complexity, this is an enthralling exploration of abstract shapes, space, and time made tangible.
Ivars Peterson (Washington, DC) is the mathematics writer and online editor of Science News and the author of The Jungles of Randomness (Wiley: 0-471-16449-6), as well as four previous trade books.

Number of Pages: 252

Dimensions: 0.63 x 9.25 x 7.5 IN

Publication Date: September 19, 2001

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2782/3097/files/OQ_t0NiCgT9781684422333_225fe230-f300-4fed-ae8b-7f889e51ef75.webp?v=1767675792
