He graduated from East Los Angeles Community College and from Cal State Los Angeles. He worked as a social worker for several nonprofit agencies and was one of the founders of the Chicano literary magazine Con Safos; Reflections of Life in the Barrio. Later he moved to Tucson Arizona and received a Masters in Library Science from the University of Arizona. He worked as a librarian until he retired from the Kellogg Foundation.
