DeKnight attended the University of California at Santa Cruz where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and went on to earn an M.F.A. in playwriting from UCLA. He got his start in the entertainment industry as a staff writer on the groundbreaking television series \u003ci\u003eBuffy the Vampire Slayer\u003c\/i\u003e. He then wrote, directed, and produced on the series \u003ci\u003eAngel\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSmallville\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eDollhouse \u003c\/i\u003ebefore creating and running \u003ci\u003eSpartacus \u003c\/i\u003efor the premium cable channel Starz. From there he executive produced and showran season one of the acclaimed Marvel\/Netflix series \u003ci\u003eDaredevil\u003c\/i\u003e.
