In a study published in 2016, Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance found that the number of yoga practitioners increased by 50 percent since 2012 - to over 36 million people in just the United States alone. In addition, there are two people interested in becoming a yoga teacher for every one current, existing yoga teacher. This increase in participants and in newly trained yoga teachers has also seen an increase in yoga injury, unfortunately. A recent study found that more than one in every ten participants experienced musculoskeletal pain - which is comparable to the rate of injuries from all other sports. This is up to 10 times higher than previously thought. To add, yoga can also exacerbate existing injury and pain, with over 20 percent of existing injuries made worse by doing yoga. The good news is that we have the power to impact these statistics going forward. By educating ourselves, educating current instructors, and educating future instructors we can build the body of knowledge that is required to mediate injury.
