He was adopted into the Miniconjou band of the Lakota Nation. Since 1996, he has lived near Winona, MN, where he has decided to 'make his stand.\" He is just completing his second term as Winona's Poet Laureate. McCullough is married to playwright Lynn Nankivil. He is widely published and has received a number of awards for his work. This is his second book with Red Dragonfly Press. McCullough has also collaborated with Cambodian poet U Sam Oeur, a Pol Pot survivor, on a bilingual edition of U's poetry, Sacred Vows, and a memoir, Crossing Three Wildernesses.
