Er untersucht dabei auch die Tragweite ikonologischer, imagologischer, semiotischer oder metapherntheoretischer Perspektiven. Historische Entwicklungen, etwa die bürgerliche Denkmaltradition oder die Instrumentalisierung von Monumenten für nationale Identitätsbildung, werden ebenso thematisiert wie aktuelle, etwa kolonialismuskritische Denkmaldebatten.
