He's also published a historical monograph, \u003ci\u003eEmpires of the Mind: I.A. Richards and Basic English in China, 1929-1979\u003c\/i\u003e (Stanford University Press, 2004). He holds a B.A. in History from U.C. Berkeley and a Ph.D. in History and Humanities from Stanford.
