His poetry has appeared in the \"New York Literary Magazine,\" \"The Chicago Writers Association Magazine,\" \"Better than Starbucks,\" \"The Westward Quarterly,\" and \"Kelsay Books,\" among others. His essay, \"Cruel and Unusual Endings,\" about physician-assisted suicide, appeared in the Op-Ed section of the Chicago Tribune in 2000.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDr. Balter and his wife Barbara, also a retired teacher, live in Northbrook, Illinois.
