He was a leading member of the avant-garde movement \"Ménglóng Shi Rén,\" or \"Misty Poets\" in the 1970s and '80s, and much of his work appeared in the underground journal, \u003ci\u003eJintian, \u003c\/i\u003e which he co-founded in 1978. After the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and massacre in 1989, Bei Dao was exiled from China and spent many years living abroad.
