A graduate of the University of North Carolina, he attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa. He is the author of two collections of short fiction--\u003ci\u003eGateway to Paradise\u003c\/i\u003e (Persea, 2015) and \u003ci\u003eFuture Missionaries of America\u003c\/i\u003e (MacAdam\/Cage, 2009; Salt Publishing, 2010)--as well as a collection of essays: \u003ci\u003einscriptions for headstones\u003c\/i\u003e (Outpost19, 2012). His work has appeared in \u003ci\u003eParis Review, Glimmer Train, Tin House, Virginia Quarterly Review, Epoch, Ecotone, New England Review, The Sun, Best American Essays, \u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eThe Pushcart Prize Anthology.\u003c\/i\u003e With David Shields, he co-edited \u003ci\u003eFAKES: An Anthology of Pseudo-Interviews, Faux-Lectures, Quasi-Letters, \"Found\" Texts, and Other Fraudulent Artifacts\u003c\/i\u003e (W. W. Norton, 2012), and he served as editor for \u003ci\u003eThe Book of Uncommon Prayer, \u003c\/i\u003e an anthology of everyday invocations featuring the work of over 60 writers.
