Shumate has been writing poetry since an early age. He is the father of two daughters who have provided a great deal of inspiration over the years.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eAlso providing him poetical inspiration is the sport of running, an activity Shumate took up at age forty-three. Since then, he authored a blog about it for the \u003ci\u003eClarion-Ledger\u003c\/i\u003e in 2012 and won the Mississippi Track Club Master's division in 2009.
