He was a writer who transformed the landscape of Hindi literature. Sahni, who was born in Rawalpindi, in present-day Pakistan, was an active participant in the Quit India Movement and settled in India after Partition. \u003ci\u003eTamas\u003c\/i\u003e, his best-known novel, won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975 and was subsequently adapted into a National Film Award-winning film by Govind Nihalani. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1998 and the Shalaka Award, the Delhi government's highest literary prize, in 1999. \u003cb\u003eDaisy Rockwell\u003c\/b\u003e (translator) is an artist, writer, and Hindi-Urdu translator. She has translated numerous classic literary works from Hindi and Urdu into English, including Bhisham Sahni's \u003ci\u003eTamas\u003c\/i\u003e and Khadija Mastur's \u003ci\u003eThe Women's Courtyard\u003c\/i\u003e. Her translation of Geetanjali Shree's \u003ci\u003eTomb of Sand\u003c\/i\u003e was the winner of the 2022 International Booker Prize and the 2022 Warwick Prize for Women in Translation. His fiction and nonfiction have been longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award, shortlisted for The Orwell Prize, and awarded the PEN Open Book Award and the 2024 Anthony Veasna So Fiction Prize.
