During the First World War he served at the front as an infantryman and later as a transport officer. In 1921 he left London for rural north Devon, where, apart from a period as a farmer in Norfolk from 1937 to 1946, he lived and worked as a writer for the rest of his life. \u003ci\u003eTarka the Otter\u003c\/i\u003e, his seventh book, was awarded the Hawthornden Prize in 1928. He published some fifty books in all, among them \u003ci\u003eThe Patriot's Progress\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSalar the Salmon\u003c\/i\u003e, and a fifteen-volume semi-autobiographical novel cycle, \u003ci\u003eA Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight\u003c\/i\u003e. He contributed numerous articles to newspapers and periodicals and broadcast regularly on BBC radio. He was married twice and had eight children. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cb\u003eCharles Tunnicliffe \u003c\/b\u003e(1901-1979) attended London's Royal College of Art, where he graduated with distinction from the Etching and Engraving School.
