He has success writing short stories and magazine articles, and achieves prominence with the publication of \u003cem\u003eThe Jungle \u003c\/em\u003ein 1906, his exposé of the Chicago meat-packing industry. Many of his books likewise reflected his deep sense of social justice. Sinclair also ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Socialist, and was the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of California in 1934, though his highly progressive campaign was defeated. Sinclair would go on to write nearly 100 books and plays until his death in New Jersey in 1968.
