In 1980, she founded the Women's Studies Program at Northern Illinois University. \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eBate has been invited to speak to audiences all over the USA and beyond. Her many publications include \u003ci\u003eCommunication and the Sexes\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eWomen Communicating, \u003c\/i\u003eand\u003ci\u003e Freedom in the Pulpit, \u003c\/i\u003eand the video series \"Leading in the Spirit.\" \u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eBate lives in Ocean Park, Washington. She served as both local and state president for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Pacific County and Washington State. She has also been president of the governing board for Willapa Counseling Center, a nonprofit mental health center.
