His novel \u003ci\u003eWhen Memory Dies\u003c\/i\u003e (1997) was winner of the 1998 Commonwealth Writers' Prize in the Best First Book category. Sivanandan was founder editor of the journal \u003ci\u003eRace \u0026amp; Class\u003c\/i\u003e and director of the Institute of Race Relations in London.
