Can I Set Different Markup Levels for Different Book Categories in BooksCloud?

If you're running a store that spans multiple book genres - say, children's books alongside professional development titles - it's natural to want different pricing strategies for each. A $9.99 children's picture book and a $49.99 business hardcover probably shouldn't carry the same markup percentage. So the question is: does BooksCloud let you set per-category pricing rules?

The honest answer is no, not natively. But there is a practical workaround that most merchants use.

How the Price Adjuster Works

BooksCloud's Price Adjuster is found in your BooksCloud admin under Settings. It lets you set a single global markup multiplier that applies across your entire catalog when you import books. The default is 1.25x, meaning a book with a $10 wholesale cost would be priced at $12.50 in your store.

You can also configure the Price Adjuster to automatically bake the $7 shipping fee into product prices, which lets you advertise free shipping to customers without losing that cost.

What the Price Adjuster does not do is allow different multipliers per category, per genre, per price range, or per individual book at the point of import. It is a single, store-wide setting.

The Manual Override Workaround

Here's where the flexibility comes back in: after books are imported into your Shopify store, you can edit their prices individually, directly in Shopify's product editor, just like any other product. BooksCloud does not lock your prices in place.

This means the workflow for category-specific pricing looks like this:

  1. Set your Price Adjuster to a sensible global default (many merchants use 1.3x-1.5x).
  2. Import the books you want to carry.
  3. After import, go into your Shopify product editor and manually adjust the prices of any books that warrant different treatment - premium titles, specialty categories, or anything where the default markup misses the mark.

It takes a bit more hands-on time than a native per-category rule, but it gives you full control over every title's final price.

Thinking About Markup Strategically

A few things worth keeping in mind as you price by category:

Higher-priced books often tolerate a lower percentage markup. A customer buying a $45 art book is less price-sensitive than a customer buying a $10 paperback. You can sometimes take a smaller percentage on premium titles and still make more gross margin per sale.

Children's books and mass-market paperbacks are competitive. These categories have well-established retail price points that customers recognize. Pricing too far above those norms can hurt conversion, so a global markup multiplier may overprice them if it's set too high.

Specialty and niche titles often have more pricing flexibility. If you're running a store focused on a tight niche - homesteading, marine biology, vintage motorcycles - customers in that niche are often less price-sensitive and harder to find elsewhere. You may have more room to price up in these categories.

The Bottom Line

BooksCloud's Price Adjuster is a global tool, not a per-category one. Per-category pricing requires manual adjustments in Shopify after import. It's an extra step, but it's completely doable - and for stores with a thoughtful pricing strategy across multiple niches, it's the approach most merchants take.
