Does BooksCloud Automatically Update the Price in My Store When a Publisher Changes Their Wholesale Price?

Pricing is one of the most common concerns among Shopify merchants running book stores through BooksCloud. Publishers adjust their wholesale prices from time to time, and the question is always the same: will that change silently blow up your margins, or will it show up as a sudden price change in your store that confuses customers? The answer is more nuanced - and more merchant-friendly - than you might expect.

What BooksCloud Syncs (and What It Does Not)

When a publisher updates the wholesale cost of a title, BooksCloud picks up that change automatically during its regular sync cycle. The underlying cost data tied to that product in your store is updated to reflect what BooksCloud will charge you when a customer places an order.

However - and this is the important part - your retail price in Shopify is not automatically changed. The price your customers see on your product pages stays exactly where you set it. BooksCloud does not reach into your Shopify storefront and move your prices around without your knowledge.

How the Price Adjuster Fits In

BooksCloud includes a Price Adjuster tool in its admin settings (found under Settings → Price Adjuster). This lets you set a multiplier - for example, 1.25x - that applies to the wholesale cost of each book to generate a suggested retail price. You can also choose to bake the $7 flat shipping cost into that calculation.

When a publisher raises their wholesale price and BooksCloud updates the cost on your end, the Price Adjuster multiplier will apply to the new cost going forward for any new products you sync. But for products already in your store with a price you have manually set or accepted, that retail price remains as-is. You stay in control of what your customers pay.

Why This Design Makes Sense

The separation between cost and retail price is an intentional design choice. If BooksCloud automatically bumped your retail prices every time a publisher changed their wholesale price, your storefront would feel unpredictable. Long-running promotions could break. Price-matched products could shift unexpectedly. Customers who bookmarked a product could return to find a different price.

Instead, BooksCloud keeps you informed at the cost level while leaving the customer-facing price decision in your hands. If a wholesale price increase is significant enough that you need to adjust your retail price to protect your margins, you can do that deliberately - on your own schedule, with context about what changed and why.

Practical Implication: Monitor Your Margins Periodically

Because your retail price does not auto-update, there is a scenario worth being aware of: if a publisher significantly raises their wholesale price and you do not adjust your retail price, your margin on that title will compress. You might be selling a book for $18 that now costs you $14 instead of $11 to fulfill.

This is not a crisis, but it is worth doing a periodic check of your best-selling titles to make sure your pricing still makes sense relative to current wholesale costs. BooksCloud's admin gives you visibility into what each book costs, making that review straightforward.

The Short Answer

BooksCloud syncs wholesale cost updates from publishers automatically. Your retail price in Shopify is yours to control - it does not change automatically. The Price Adjuster multiplier applies to new syncs going forward, but your existing prices stay where you set them until you decide to update them.
