Inventory management is one of the operational risks every dropshipper worries about — and for books specifically, where titles regularly go out of print or temporarily out of stock, it's a valid concern. BooksCloud handles this differently depending on which method you used to add books to your store.
The Two Addition Methods and How Each Handles Stock Changes
Bulk Sync (Recommended for Most Merchants)
Bulk Sync is BooksCloud's most powerful catalog management feature. You configure a sync around a category, keyword, language, cover type, bestseller percentile, or combination of those filters. BooksCloud then:
- Automatically adds new titles that match your criteria as they become available
- Automatically removes titles that go out of stock, out of print, or no longer meet your configured criteria
This means you never have to manually audit your catalog for dead listings. A book that goes out of print simply drops out of your Bulk Sync category and is removed from your store automatically. A new bestselling title in your niche category gets added without any action on your part.
"Also, adds new books based on keywords constantly so you don't have to manage it." — BooksCloud merchant review (early adopter)
Individually Added Books
If you added books one by one (rather than through Bulk Sync), BooksCloud still maintains real-time inventory data. When a title goes out of stock, its availability status updates in the BooksCloud system. However, the product remains listed on your Shopify store — it just won't be fulfillable.
For individually added books, periodically review your catalog or set products to "draft" status in Shopify when stock drops to zero. BooksCloud marks unavailable titles clearly in the admin dashboard.
What Happens If an Out-of-Stock Book Gets Ordered
Orders for out-of-stock titles enter a "Not Shipping" or "Partially Shipped" status in BooksCloud. You'll be notified so you can issue a refund or communicate with the customer. This situation is minimized when using Bulk Sync, since unavailable titles are proactively removed before customers can order them.
The Practical Recommendation
Use Bulk Sync for the core of your book catalog. It is self-maintaining, handles out-of-print titles automatically, and keeps your store stocked with currently available, relevant titles without ongoing manual management.
