BooksCloud sources new, commercially published titles from 30,000+ publishers. If you also want to carry used paperbacks, signed first editions, or out-of-print collectibles, nothing stops you — Shopify is flexible enough to handle both product types in the same store. Here is how to structure it cleanly.
Two Inventory Types, One Store
Shopify treats every product the same way regardless of where it comes from. BooksCloud products are pushed via the app and managed automatically. Your used and collectible inventory is entered manually (or via a CSV import) and tracked by you. These two pools sit side by side in your Shopify admin without conflict.
The key is clear organization so customers always know what they are buying.
Use Collections to Separate the Experience
Create distinct collections:
- New Titles — auto-populated by BooksCloud Bulk Sync categories
- Used Books — manually curated, with condition notes in the description
- Collectibles & First Editions — high-value items with provenance details and photos
- Signed Copies — if you source signed inventory through author events or dealers
Tag every manually entered product with a condition tag (e.g., condition-used, condition-like-new, signed) so customers can filter. BooksCloud products can be tagged condition-new automatically by adding a tag in the Bulk Sync settings or via a Shopify automation.
Product Page Best Practices for Used Books
Used and collectible listings need more detail than new titles because each copy is unique:
- Upload your own photos of the actual copy, not a stock cover image
- Include condition grade in the title (e.g., "The Great Gatsby — First Edition, VG+")
- Write a condition description in the product body: binding tightness, any markings, dust jacket state
- Set inventory to exactly 1 and disable "continue selling when out of stock"
For BooksCloud products, all of this is already handled — cover image, description, and stock status are managed for you.
Fulfillment Is the Main Difference to Communicate
BooksCloud orders ship from BooksCloud's fulfillment center via USPS, typically within 3–7 days. Your used book orders ship from wherever you store them — your home, a storage unit, or a third-party storage solution.
Be explicit with customers:
- New titles: "Ships from our fulfillment partner within 3–7 business days"
- Used/collectible: "Ships from our private collection within 1–2 business days" (or whatever your actual timeline is)
You can set this up using Shopify's shipping profiles and location settings, or simply note it clearly in each product's description.
Pricing the Two Inventory Types
BooksCloud products default to a 1.25x markup on the publisher cost, with a $7 flat shipping fee per order. You are free to adjust this markup in the BooksCloud Price Adjuster settings.
Used books are priced entirely by you. Collectibles typically carry a premium based on rarity, condition, and market comparables (check AbeBooks, eBay sold listings, and VALORE for reference prices).
The Hybrid Store Advantage
Carrying both new and used titles gives you a competitive angle that neither Amazon Marketplace nor a pure-dropship store can replicate easily. New titles satisfy customers who want the latest releases or bestsellers. Used and collectible inventory satisfies hunters, gift buyers, and bibliophiles looking for something with character. The two audiences often overlap.
