How to Set Up Shopify Shipping Zones for a US-Only BooksCloud Store

BooksCloud ships to all 50 US states, APO/FPO military addresses, and US territories - but nowhere outside the US. If your store is set up to accept orders from anywhere in the world and a customer in Canada or the UK completes checkout, you will have an order you literally cannot fulfill. Getting your Shopify shipping zones right before you open to traffic is one of the most important configuration steps you can take.

Here is a clear walkthrough of how to do it.

Understanding Shopify Shipping Zones

A shipping zone in Shopify is a group of countries or regions that share the same shipping rates and options at checkout. If a customer's shipping address falls within a zone, they see the rates assigned to that zone. If their address falls outside all defined zones, they see no shipping options and cannot complete checkout.

That last point is your tool. By defining only a US shipping zone and not adding any other countries, international customers will be blocked at checkout - cleanly, without an error message, simply by having no available shipping method.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up a US-Only Shipping Zone

Step 1: Go to Settings → Shipping and Delivery in your Shopify admin.

This is where all shipping zones and rates are managed.

Step 2: Find your shipping profile.

You will see at least one shipping profile - the General or Default profile. If BooksCloud has created its own app-specific shipping profile (check under "App shipping profiles"), you need to configure zones there as well. Both profiles need to be correctly zoned.

Step 3: Edit the shipping zone.

Click on the shipping profile and look for your shipping zones. If there is an existing zone that includes countries outside the US - for example, a "Rest of World" zone - remove it. You want only a United States zone to remain.

Step 4: Add the United States zone if it does not exist.

Click "Add shipping zone," name it (United States), and select United States from the country list. Shopify treats the US as a single selectable country. All 50 states, DC, and US territories are automatically included.

Step 5: Set the shipping rate for your US zone.

Inside the US zone, add your shipping rate. You have two common options:

  • Free shipping - $0 to the customer, with the $7 BooksCloud fulfillment cost baked into your product prices via the Price Adjuster multiplier
  • Flat rate - Charge customers a set shipping fee (commonly $4.99 or $7.99) and absorb or profit from the difference relative to BooksCloud's $7 cost

Step 6: Remove all other zones.

Delete any zones that include countries outside the US. If you see a "Rest of World" or "International" zone, remove it. Without an active zone for international addresses, those customers will not be able to check out.

H3: Confirming Your BooksCloud App Shipping Profile

BooksCloud may add its own shipping profile within Shopify when you install the app. Navigate to Settings → Shipping and Delivery and scroll down to "App-managed rates" or "App shipping profiles." Review what BooksCloud has set up and make sure the rates displayed there align with your pricing strategy. If BooksCloud's default shows free shipping, you may want to adjust that to match your overall store configuration.

Test Before You Launch

After configuring your zones, test the checkout experience from a customer's perspective:

  1. Add a book to your cart
  2. Proceed to checkout
  3. Enter a US address - confirm shipping options appear and the rate is correct
  4. Try entering a non-US address - confirm no shipping options appear and checkout cannot be completed

This test takes two minutes and confirms your configuration is working exactly as intended.

Add a Shipping Policy Page

Even with zones correctly configured, international visitors who discover your store will appreciate knowing upfront why they cannot complete an order. A brief line in your Shipping Policy - "We currently ship within the United States only, including all 50 states, APO/FPO addresses, and US territories" - answers that question before it becomes a customer service inquiry.

"BooksCloud is very user-friendly, and the support makes using it even easier. Sam's guidance helped me get set up quickly. I loved it!"

The support team is available if you run into any configuration questions during setup - but with these steps, your shipping zones should be working cleanly from the start.
