The first reinforced concrete buildings were built in Vienna around 1900. Their skeleton construction enabled wide-span spaces with high load-bearing capacity and made innovative multi-purpose buildings possible: residential and commercial buildings with loft-like factory wings, integrated theaters and cinemas, factories - they were the scenes of an accelerated urban life. This book is the first to document the pioneering development of this new building technology, implemented by daring master builders, engineers, architects and determined clients. Around 90 buildings analyzed - from previously unnoticed buildings to icons of Viennese architecture - illustrate the spatial flexibility and construction quality of reinforced concrete. The pioneering years of reinforced concrete shed new light on the architecture of Vienna around 1900.
