It is now five years since Annabella Winters adopted six children from the train and married Dell Rutherford. Since that time they also took custody of Annabella's niece and nephew at her brother's death. And the ninth child arrived the usual way born to Annabella and Dell within the first year of their marriage.

This story opens as the older children are taking steps into adulthood and finding paths to life careers. Patrick has finished reading law in Denver. Toby and Gunner, one of the Swedes on the plateau, have developed a construction business and a water business designing and building water delivery systems to small towns. They are also in demand for installing indoor plumbing across the region.

Molly has learned a lot and grown her animal husbandry talents. She takes time to apprentice with a local vet and finally convinces Dell that she has the skill and knowledge to operate a horse breeding ranch.

As the older youngsters move on with their lives the younger children carry on with the business of growing.
