During the Ottoman Empire, on the Ottoman land, Ottomans built their cities around the great mosques and the bedestens. Without a bedesten, the settlements could not be registered as a city. So in order to be a city, a settlement needed to have a bedesten. The bedestens were made from brick and tiles with leaded domes.
