Beatified in 2018, Christian de Cherg?, a French Trappist monk was prior of Our Lady of Atlas Monastery in Tibherine, Algeria when in 1996 he and six members of his community were kidnapped and killed. The film "Of Gods and Men," depicted their decision to remain with their Algerian-Muslim neighbors, even when knowing their lives were at risk.Here, in writings available in English for the first time, readers can discover that de Cherg?'s significance extends far beyond the events of his last days. His was a Christian spirituality rooted in hope, conversion, humility, constancy, and what he called the martyrdom of love.

Christian S. Krokus is professor of theology at the University of Scranton. He is the author of The Theology of Louis Massignon: Islam, Christ, and the Church.
Habib Zanzana is professor of world languages and cultures at the University of Scranton. He is an editor of Gender in French Banlieue Cinema: Intersectional Perspectives.
