The first human hits the asphalt at ten forty-two on the night of Sunday, June 2nd. A man walking on the other side of the square instinctively looks up. He manages to see several people --he couldn't tell how many, as he later recounts to the police-- on the window ledges of a skyscraper. And suddenly, before he can even be astonished by what is happening, they all jump at once.

They jump simultaneously and crash to the ground almost at the same time.

And again, that indescribable noise. Only much more intense.

That warm summer night in Madrid, ten people throw themselves into the void from ten rooms on the seventh floor of the hotel overlooking Plaza de Espa?a. None of them had checked in at reception. They carry nothing that identifies them. There is a young woman who can barely be thirty, but also someone over eighty. One corpse is dressed in clothes worth over six thousand euros. Another wears clothes given by an NGO. Their worlds have never crossed. They don't know each other. No guest or employee remembers seeing them at the hotel, and there are no personal belongings in the rooms they jumped from; though on the nightstand in room 716, investigators find a pair of lit candles that seem to be praying to a small virgin illuminated softly. This is just the first of the surprises.
