"The roar of our time is sometimes colonialist, sometimes pan-Hispanist; it swings from insult to lament, from sanctimony to the snap of a chainsaw. In any case--however it manifests--it deserves our attention, for it offers clues to the ideas and values shaping the present of our societies. This work of understanding and analyzing the present began six years ago with Savages of a New Era, and it continues with this essay. It will go on in the future, hopefully with fewer roars and fewer savages, with fewer disorders and extravagances to report." Once the common horizon we called reality is lost, new challenges and discontents arise in the contemporary world. Political leaders, who should act as rational agents and exercise public responsibility, have become agitators trafficking in base passions. Meanwhile, artists bow to good causes, sacrificing freedom and transgression to fit the moral demands of the present. Entrenched in increasingly distorted versions of reality, politicians wage cultural battles that cement their followers' loyalty, shielding them from all criticism. In Latin America, a new wave of messianic leaders seeks either to change their nations' histories or to return to lost golden ages. In Spain, the decolonial debate and pan-Hispanist nostalgia flare up, and while some dream of a solitary America protected from Western modernity, others long for a civilizational union between both sides of the Atlantic, one that might free itself from globalist Westernism. In this ideological and geopolitical disorder, we no longer know what place Hispanic countries hold in the world. We hear roars, we witness political performances, we smell the anger in the air. It is our time--and we must try to understand it.

Author Biography
Carlos Granés (Bogotá 1975), antropólogo y ensayista, es autor de La revancha de la imaginación (CSIC, 2008), El puño invisible (Taurus, 2011), La invención del paraíso (Taurus, 2015), Salvajes de una nueva época (Taurus, 2019), Delirio americano (Taurus 2022) y Antiutopías (Angosta, 2023). Durante diez años fue columnista de El Espectador y actualmente escribe en los medios españoles ABC y The Objective. Ha sido reconocido con el Premio Extraordinario de doctorado en antropología, el Premio Internacional de Ensayo Isabel Polanco (por El puño invisible) y el Open Bank by Vanity Fair (por Delirio americano). Su labor como columnista le ha valido dos Premios Nacionales de Periodismo Simón Bolívar. Actualmente edita la obra periodística de Mario Vargas Llosa, en cinco volúmenes, para la editorial Alfaguara, y es miembro de la Academia Colombiana de la Lengua.
