by Corinne L. Saucier (Author)
The young people of today
are not aware of conditions of their grandparents' time. An effort is made on
these pages to record the past in such a manner as to make this generation
understand and appreciate the evolution experienced by our parish.
-from the Preface
Histoire et Geographie des Avoyelles en Louisiane, a French
text, accurately and interestingly details the history of this central
Louisiana parish. In carefully researching this work, the author personally
toured the region and interviewed its residents. As a result, she has produced
a necessary asset to the exploration of the rich history of Louisiana and the
South.
In this book, the French language links the reader to the past, to a time
when the French flag flew over the area and the language was thus used more
frequently in the state.
Author Biography
An avid historian, Corinne Saucier was a native of Avoyelles Parish, born in Marksville, Louisiana. Her interest in her home parish prompted her to write the French language book Traditions de la Paroisse des Avoyelles en Louisiane and its English version, History of Avoyelles Parish. She is also the author of Histoire et Geographie des Avoyelles en Louisiane. All three of these works examine the history of Avoyelle parish, from the hardships and influence of its first Indian and French settlers to the Red River flood of 1927 and beyond. Saucier also gathered, translated, and published a collection of Louisiana folk tales in 1962. Dr. Saucier received her education at the Louisiana State Normal College, graduating in 1914 and going on to teach and serve as principal in the Avoyelles Parish school system. Saucier earned a master of arts degree in folklore in 1923 and taught in Duluth, Minnesota, and Chicago before returning to Louisiana. There she served as an assistant professor of Spanish and an assistant professor of French at Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern State University) from 1931-1955. In 1949, she earned a doctorate in folklore. Louisiana State University still honors this accomplished teacher and author by offering two scholarships in her name: The Corinne L. Saucier Scholarship and the Corinne L. Saucier Romance Language Scholarship, both for graduate study in Spanish or French. Dr. Saucier died in Natchitoches, LA.
