On St. Patrick's Day eve, Meghan and Sean get help from their three grandaunties and manage to capture a sly leprechaun.

Front Jacket

The question is not, Do leprechauns exist? (because, lads and lasses, they surely do). Rather, it is, How do you catch one of the wee fellows?

That is just what the O'Sullivan children, Meghan and Sean, are wondering on St. Patrick's Day eve while visiting their three old grandaunties, Auntie Moira, Auntie Bridget, and Auntie Kathleen.

More than anything, the children want to catch a leprechaun.

At first, the grandaunties don't think that is such a good idea, but they can never say no to their niece and nephew.

According to the three ladies, the children will not have to search far for a leprechaun. One named Lucky O'Leprechaun followed the O'Sullivans to America from Ireland and lives under one of the thornbushes in the yard.

Yet the question remains, How do you catch one of the wee fellows?

Meghan and Sean try and try, but Lucky is just too tricky to be caught. Full of blarney and quick of wit, leprechauns can talk themselves out of almost any trap.

If they are so difficult to catch, why do so many people, including Meghan and Sean, want to catch a leprechaun?

The answer is simple: because if you catch one, he must grant you a wish. Many people wish for his pot of gold!

Still, one question is unanswered: How do you catch one of the wee fellows?

Meghan and Sean soon develop a plan so clever that it would turn even the shrewdest leprechaun green with envy!

Will their plan work? What will they ask for if they do catch Lucky O'Leprechaun? Will it be his pot of gold, or will they discover that some things are even more precious?

Jana Dillon's Lucky O'Leprechaun follows the success of her critically acclaimed debut, Jeb Scarecrow's Pumpkin Patch. Of her first book, Booklist wrote, "author-illustrator Dillon shows a facility with caricature and mood, a way with color that extends from subtle shading to electric color combinations, and an ability to create a style that looks new yet recalls an earlier era of picture book illustration."

Ms. Dillon, a second-generation Irish-American, actively visits elementary schools to teach children about the Little People as well as the creative processes of writing and illustrating books. Her vibrant, captivating illustrations have been exhibited in several museums.
