This is the most complete collection of Georg Trakl's poetry available in Russian. It includes, for the first time, the surviving fragments of his early dramatic works - without which it is difficult to grasp the theme of sacrifice and transformation that lies at the heart of his vision.
The Hymns to Night establish the point of origin for Trakl's "great text." Drawing on the Novalisian myth, he displaces the figure of the dead beloved onto his sister, whom his transgressive imagination sees as having died; from there the myth unfolds according to its own logic - the sister becomes an image of sacrifice, and humankind a race divided into two sexes, condemned to destruction in its inner split and its longing for union.
The wanderer in Trakl is a soul that finds itself on earth as something alien. His journey passes through the Novalisian night that unites lovers, into the entanglement of life and death.
Throughout this volume, the German word Traum is rendered as vision rather than "dream" - a deliberate choice: Trakl's poetics are built upon visionary images of altered consciousness, wounded by a forbidden desire for his own sister.
The book is accompanied by an afterword in which the translator sets out his approach, and by concise, non-academic commentary on nearly every poem - the perspective of someone who has worked with Trakl's poetry for more than thirty years, and who seeks to render in Russian the tonality of his inner light and darkness.
