Denkmäler sind Orte kollektiver Erinnerung - und zunehmend Orte von Kontroversen. Ihr Bestand wird in aktuellen Debatten hinterfragt, manche Monumente werden umgestaltet oder sogar umgestürzt und verschwinden so aus der Wahrnehmung. Der Kampf um die visuelle Präsenz, die Denkmäler verbürgen, hat allerdings stets schon eine Rolle gespielt. Mit Blick auf die Geschichte lässt sich etwa fragen: Wer wurde nie erinnert, wer blieb ausgeschlossen, was wurde geplant, aber nie gebaut? Der Sammelband vereint unterschiedliche methodische Ansätze und disziplininäre Perspektiven, um die komplexen Dynamiken von Denkmalsetzungen, -kritiken und -transformationen zu analysieren. Er untersucht dabei auch die Tragweite ikonologischer, imagologischer, semiotischer oder metapherntheoretischer Perspektiven. Historische Entwicklungen, etwa die bürgerliche Denkmaltradition oder die Instrumentalisierung von Monumenten für nationale Identitätsbildung, werden ebenso thematisiert wie aktuelle, etwa kolonialismuskritische Denkmaldebatten. Beiträge u.a. aus der Kunst- und Literaturwissenschaft bieten neue methodische Zugänge und zeigen, dass Denkmalforschung immer auch Gesellschaftsanalyse ist.

Monuments are sites of collective memory - and increasingly, the
subject of controversy. Their existence is questioned, individual
monuments are being remodelled or toppled, and the meaning attributed to
them often changes along with the context. This volume combines
different methodological approaches and disciplinary perspectives to
analyse the complex dynamics of monument settings, critique and
transformations. It examines the setting and toppling of monuments as
symbolic acts reflecting power relations, and analyses the scope of
iconological, semiotic or metaphor-theoretical perspectives. Historical
developments are addressed, such as the instrumentalisation of monuments
in the creation of national identity, as are current debates on
monuments, e.g. those critical of colonialism.

Author Biography

Markus Dauß is professor of architectural history and theory at the University of Bonn. His research focuses on comparative historicism, the history of infrastructure and mobility and, more recently, images of ruins.

Valentine von Fellenberg is an art historian and has worked as an assistant professor at the universities of Bern and Lausanne. Her research focuses on Swiss 19^th-century art in an international context, the theory and history of border crossing, and the history of landscape.
