Initially a surgeon by training, he became the principal exponent of Darwinism and popularizer of "scientific naturalism." He is the author of Victorian Stage Pulpiteer: Bernard Shaw's Crusade (Georgia), and his articles have appeared in such journals as Victorian Literature and Culture, the Massachusetts Review, and the Shaw Review.
