by Grant L. Hodgson (Author)

On 15 November 1825 an extended conversation between CMS missionaries and Ngāpuhi rangatira was recorded at Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, Aotearoa New Zealand. The dialogue involved the renowned Ngāpuhi leader Hongi Hika and his close kinsmen, alongside CMS missionaries led by Reverend Henry Williams, with George Clarke, James Kemp and Richard Davis also present.

Translated by William Gilbert (WG) Puckey - a young CMS member who had become fluent in te reo since arriving in Kerikeri in 1819, aged 14 - the exchange was recorded by Davis, preserving a rare glimpse into the cultural dynamics of the time.
